Decades ago, a decision was made (probably correctly) to de-emphasize “mental hospitals” in favor of community treatment. The problem is that while that worked for a while, the inevitable budget crunches diminished the community resources and left many without recourse other than to live on the street and beg.
Here in Florida the new DeSantis law kicks in on 1/1/25. It will be illegal to be homeless and if you are caught sleeping in public you will be arrested.
The Trump admin doubled the USA’s debt giving tax breaks to rich people. Trump says if reelected he will continue his tax breaks for rich people. Republicans have zero empathy for anyone except right wing dictators and billionaires.
I suspect there is a very common logical fallacy at work here. You can’t assume that because two things exist together that either caused the other. I had a friend who was so intelligent that his letter to the editor of the St Louis Post Dispatch was run as a feature article. He was a poster child for well adjusted, and had a supervisory position in a business making electronic parts. Then, his job got outsourced to India. Within 6 months, he lost his job, his house, his family, and his mind. He became homeless, and anyone examining him would have considered him mentally ill, and in my inexpert opinion, they would have been spot on—- but the mental illness didn’t create the homelessness— it was the other way around.
Republican legislatures are notorious for slashing mental budgets out of state budgets. Look at what Texas did. They slashed millions out of their budget. The home of the Uvalde and El Paso massacres massacred their mental health budget.
To add insult to injury in Georgia Gov. Kemp is expected to sign a bill that’ll make it more difficult for the homeless to even vote. I wish lawmakers would stop politicizing a crisis we have with chronic homelessness nationwide. In Seattle I see more pitched tents in various places and the prices for rent average around $2000 a month. This is unbelievable we as a society can’t find a solution to get people off the streets and stop treating them like human garbage
Oh please. There are, at times, hundreds of thousands of people that experience temporary homelessness. The reason it is temporary is they find a way to solve this problem and society should spend the money to help them. There is also a core of 150,000+ hardcore homeless that refuse free mental health care, free drug counseling and a free place to sleep if it has rules. This group doesn’t want their “problem” solved.
